Here we go again

The bad news: President Obama will soon declare himself Fuhrer Obama. The good news: Free government-funded jackboots for everyone!

The July 2, 2007 speech in Colorado Springs where Obama called for "a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded" as the military is the quote that will not die on talk radio and the dark corners of the Internet.

The Rocky Mountain News published the full text of Obama’s speech. Interestingly enough, that particular quote is not included. It was an off-script ad lib the president apparently added on the fly.

The final solution

In preparation for Rep. Paul Broun’s upcoming health care town hall meeting in Oconee County, I suggest everyone familiarize themselves with Godwin’s Law. After attending the health care reform rally Saturday in Oconee County, I can assure you it’ll come in handy.

In related news, Broun, R-Athens, has announced an opening act: Cleveland punk legends Pere Ubu!

Thanks Tom Cruise for ruining another movie for me ...

Maybe I am the only one this bothers, but has anyone seen the trailer for the new Tom Cruise movie, ”Valkyrie”? Cruise plays a man named Claus von Stauffenberg who was one of the leaders in an assassination plot to kill Adolf Hitler.

Let me start off by saying, it looks like a really good movie. That being said, maybe it's just the journalist in me, but I like to see real life events portrayed as accurately as possible. So what really bothers me about this film is Cruise's complete lack of a German accent. And I am fairly certain someone named Claus von Stauffenberg didn't speak in unaccented American English.

Teh best Daily Show evah

You had to see this coming, but it made my week when it finally happened. The Daily Show mocked Paul Broun Thursday night. Since Jon Stewart is funnier than me, without further wisecracks, here’s the clip:

We need to get Broun on the Colbert Report stat. Better know the 10th District!

There can be only one wonky Nate Silver wannabe in Athens

Republicans say Broun's off base

Keith Olbermann isn’t the only journalist taking Rep. Paul Broun to task over Hitlergate.

Fox News’ Brit Hume called Broun’s comments deranged.

“There are signs the same kind of derangement syndrome liberals exhibited over George W. Bush and Sarah Palin may now be afflicting some conservatives over Barack Obama,” Hume wrote Tuesday on his blog, Political Grapevine.

Hume pointed out that the Department of Homeland Security, under President Bush, is already creating the Civilian Corps, the “civilian national defense force” Broun fears may lead us down the path of National Socialism.

Hitlergate

I am still confused about whether Rep. Paul Broun believes President-elect Obama is a covert Hitler wannabe who could turn America into a Marxist dictatorship.

Broun’s speculation that Obama just might take our guns and use his own personal S.S. to impose his socialist brand of wealth redistribution is all over cable news, the papers and the blogs nationwide.

Tuesday was Veteran's Day and his office was closed. I called his spokeswoman on her cell but she did not return it, so I could not score an interview with the congressman. He released a statement late in the afternoon in which he accused an Associated Press reporter of sensationalizing his remarks, expounded on his conspiracy theories about the upcoming Obama presidency and specifically refused to apologize.

Barack's Brounshirts

Two days after calling President-elect Obama a "Marxist" at a Rotary Club meeting in Augusta, Broun, R-Athens, is at it again.

Citing a story that’s made the rounds on far-right-wing Web sites, Broun told the Associated Press today that our next president “might be planning to form a Gestapo-like security force so he can rule as a dictator.”

“It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he’s the one who proposed this national security force,” Broun said. “I’m just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may — may not, I hope not — but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism.”
