SEC Media Days: UGA picked second in East
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Fri, 07/23/2010 - 7:19am.HOOVER, Ala.--We wrap up here today with Day 3 of SEC Media Days. The media vote for the All-SEC and predicated order of finish is out.
Here's a story that I filed:
HOOVER, Ala.—Quarterback Tim Tebow may be gone from Florida, but Georgia is still projected to finish second in the Southeastern Conference’s Eastern Division, according to the vote released Friday as SEC Media Days wrapped up.
Florida garnered 1,030 points, well ahead of the Bulldogs. Georgia just edged out South Carolina for second in the East vote (791 points to 790), tied for the second closest voting margin since 1992.
The Gators return 11 starters total on offense and defense including center Mike Pouncey and safety Ahmad Black.
Georgia has every starter back on offense except at quarterback where redshirt freshman Aaron Murray takes over. The Bulldogs are switching to a 3-4 scheme after a defensive staff overhaul following an 8-5 season.

Green, Butler front and center for Georgia
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Fri, 06/25/2010 - 9:15am.We’re less than four weeks away now from the first sign of college football around these parts: SEC Media Days.
Usually that means Georgia football coach Mark Richt brings a couple of seniors with him for the trip to Hoover, Ala.
Not this year. Richt is going in a different direction.
Juniors A.J. Green and Drew Butler and senior fullback Shaun Chapas will represent the Bulldogs on their day in suburban Birmingham on July 22, according to associate athletic director Claude Felton.
Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno, Rennie Curran and Thomas Davis never got their Media Days’ turn. They were gone to the NFL before their senior seasons (Moreno never made it to his junior season).
The last Georgia junior to go to Hoover was All-American end David Pollack, who went both in 2003 and 2004.
One reason Green and Butler are going is that they are consensus preseason All-Americans, something even Stafford and Moreno couldn’t say.

Will Evans be youngest SEC AD again?
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Tue, 03/23/2010 - 10:13am.Damon Evans is finishing up his sixth year as Georgia’s athletic director, but he could become the youngest AD again in the Southeastern Conference.
That’s because Arizona hired 38-year old Greg Byrne away from Mississippi State on Monday. He starts his new job on May 1.
Evans, now 40, joked back in 2008 after Byrne was hired in Starkville that "I'm no longer the young one. I tease him about that."
Byrne’s coaching hires included football coach Dan Mullen from Florida and baseball coach John Cohen from Kentucky.
The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported one candidate to replace Byrne is Joe Dean Jr., 55, the athletic director at Birmingham-Southern. Another candidate could be Mississippi State senior associate athletic director Scott Stricklin.

SEC `festival' gets cranked up
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Thu, 03/11/2010 - 10:23am.We’re gearing up for a long day of basketball here in Nashville.
Long because Georgia tips off at 9:45 p.m. ET (or a tad bit later) against Arkansas in the SEC Tournament.
It’s one of four games on tap today. There's four more coming on Friday in the quarterfinals.
“It’s a festival of the regular season,” Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl said. “I think all the teams coming together and being in one venue, the fans, the media that follows them, just everybody in the SEC family coming together.”
Tennessee is 11-5 in the SEC, the third best record in the conference, but it’s 9-7 Ole Miss and 9-7 Mississippi State from the SEC West that get first-round byes.
Pearl isn’t going to complain about the tournament format now, saying he just wants to focus on LSU. “In the offseason, I’ll comment on how conference tournaments, you know, how we think their formats can be improved. …It’s a fair question. I just don’t want to answer it right now.”

College football numbers galore
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 10:22am.The National Football Foundation put out some figures this week that speak to the popularity of college football. Several caught my attention related to Georgia and the SEC.
Directly from their list:
*CBS Sports averaged its highest ratings since the sport returned to the network in 1996 with the SEC on CBS. The 4.4 rating represented a 29 percent increase over last year, and the network also landed the highest rated SEC Championship ever with the battle between No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Alabama earning an 11.1 rating or an 18 percent increase above the previous year's game between the same two teams.
*ESPN averaged 2.1 million households, 2.87 million viewers and a 2.2 rating per game this season, making it the most-viewed season for the outlet since 1994 and the highest-rated since 1999.
*The Southeastern Conference led all leagues in attendance, at 76,288 a game.

Green can finish as SEC's top receiver even with injury
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Thu, 11/19/2009 - 4:58pm.A.J. Green’s shoulder injury will keep him off the field Saturday against Kentucky, but won’t necessarily knock him out of his top spot among SEC receivers at the end of the season.
The sophomore currently leads the SEC in catches per game and receiving yards per game.
Even if his injured left shoulder forces him to also miss next week’s game against Georgia Tech, Green can still end up the SEC leader in both categories if he returns for a bowl game.
To qualify for NCAA and SEC statistics, a player must appear in 75 percent of his team’s games. Green would play in 10 of 13, 77 percent, if he’s back for the bowl game.
Georgia hasn’t had a player lead the SEC in receiving (based on receptions per game) since Brice Hunter in 1993-94. Green led the league last year in receiving yards per game.
Green is averaging 5.2 catches and 83.4 yards per game this year. Ole Miss’ Shay Hodge is right behind, averaging 5.0 and 81.0.

Meyer draws fine from SEC for comment on Williams' hit
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Fri, 11/06/2009 - 1:19pm.The Southeastern Conference has hit Florida coach Urban Meyer with a $30,000 fine for his comments this week that a penalty should have been called on Georgia linebacker Nick Williams for a late hit on quarterback Tim Tebow.
Here is the announcement from the SEC:
University of Florida head football coach Urban Meyer has been fined $30,000 by the Southeastern Conference for his public comments concerning officiating, Commissioner Mike Slive announced Friday.
The fine is the first since the conference’s Athletic Directors, with the full support of the league’s Presidents and Chancellors, voted to have all violations of SEC Bylaw 10.5.4 enforced by suspensions and fines.

O-line could shuffle again
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Fri, 10/23/2009 - 9:54am.Here's the football notebook that ran in our paper today. Since we've had some online technical difficulties, I'm posting the notebook here in the blog.

Georgia has used four different starting combinations on its offensive line this season.
The fifth could be on the way.
Junior Clint Boling said Thursday that offensive line coach Stacy Searels could be making more changes for the Oct. 31 game against Florida.
Boling lined up at first-team left tackle in the portion of Thursday’s practice open to the media. Cordy Glenn was at left guard with Ben Jones at center, Chris Davis at right guard and Vince Vance at right tackle.
“He might be considering moving things around a little bit, just so he can get a lineup out there that he likes,” Boling said. “I’m not really sure what he has in mind.”

Destin Day 3 Wrap
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Thu, 05/28/2009 - 10:44pm.
Just flipped to ESPN Classic here in the hotel in Destin. Auburn and Vanderbilt football is on from last season.
Expect more SEC teams showing up on the world wide leader’s channels when the new TV deal kicks in starting this season.
Nothing earth-shattering came out of the SEC meeting Thursday here.
The presidents and chancellors met for a few hours this afternoon and the conference held an awards dinner this evening.
The meetings wrap up Friday. The presidents, athletics directors and senior woman administrators meet Friday morning before the general business session with each school voting on proposed SEC and NCAA legislation.
Georgia president Michael Adams said the presidents heard from commissioner Mike Slive about his desire for the end of the coaches back and forth bantering that has dominated the football offseason.
