Plenty of Dogs on Freshman All-SEC team

Georgia led all SEC teams with six players landing on the conference’s all-freshman team. That would seem to bode well for the Bulldogs future, but it’s also an indication that players were pressed into early action at some positions by not having capable older players available from previous recruiting classes to fill holes in the lineup.

There’s no doubt that A.J. Green has lived up to his billing from high school in South Carolina as a playmaking receiver.

Offensive linemen Ben Jones, Justin Anderson and Cordy Glenn all were starters in their first seasons playing. That shows promising talent and also that the Bulldogs missed out recruiting offensive linemen in 2004 and 2005 that could have been upperclassmen.

The Bulldogs signed three offensive linemen in ’04 and only one in ’05. Only Chester Adams panned out from those two recruiting classes.

Fearless Freshmen Forecast

As we projected in a story last week, Mark Richt said Tuesday that eight to 12 first-year freshmen will probably play Saturday against Georgia Southern.

Georgia hasn’t had more than six play in a season since 2003.

So who’s in and who’s out?

Let’s try to break down the 21 members of this year’s recruiting class. That's minus pro baseball signee Xavier Avery and Toby Jackson, who is spending the season at Hargrave Military.

Locks to play
Cordy Glenn--Well, considering he’s starting at right guard, this is a no-brainer.
A.J. Green--Already a second-team receiver. It might not be long before he joins Alabama’s Julio Jones among freshmen starting receivers in the SEC.
