Georgia football makes curtain call on Raycom
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Fri, 11/14/2008 - 5:21pm.
It’s another 12:30 p.m. ET kickoff Saturday for Georgia on the early SEC game on Raycom Sports.
The Bulldogs are making their third appearance on the Raycom game in the last five weeks, but the Auburn game will be the final football appearance on Raycom for Georgia.
Next football season, ESPN Regional Television becomes the over-the-air-syndicator for SEC games under a 15-year deal struck this summer with the self-declared World Wide Leader in Sports. ESPN will pay an average of $150 million a year for SEC games, according to the SportsBusiness Journal.
Raycom also showed SEC football games under the names Jefferson Pilot and Lincoln Financial Sports since 1986. Georgia is 33-27-4 on its games.

Dobbs putting a rush on interception leader
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 9:36pm.
Demarcus Dobbs is closing in on safety Reshad Jones.
Dobbs, the 6-foot-2, 282 pound defensive end, snatched his second interception of the season against Kentucky Saturday, snuffing out the Wildcats final drive in Georgia's 42-38 win.
Jones leads the Bulldogs with three interceptions, but Dobbs is now lurking.
“Reshad already knows that the heat is on,” Dobbs said after Monday’s practice. “The heat was on when I got my first one and I told everybody that I was going to get another one, but nobody believed me.”
Dobbs and linebacker Darryl Gamble are tied for second on the Bulldogs with two interceptions.
Dobbs isn’t conceding anything to Jones.
“We’ve still got three more games,” the redshirt sophomore said.
Dobbs played tight end at Calvary Baptist in Savannah.
“I told Coach Richt, I’m up for any challenge,” Dobbs said.

Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Mon, 10/20/2008 - 10:16am.
The police incident reports on the arrests of Brandon Wood and Vince Vance this weekend provide some more details.
Wood was arrested for DUI. He had a blood alcohol level of .11. The legal limit is .08.
Here's an update that we've put on our Web site after reading the reports this morning.
In other news, Knowshon Moreno is the SEC offensive player of the week.

Can UGA expand Sanford Stadium by Saturday?
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Wed, 09/24/2008 - 11:31pm.
Georgia is considering expanding Sanford Stadium to more than 101,000 seats in the years to come under a master plan presented at the school’s athletic board meeting Wednesday
They sure could use a stadium as big as Michigan’s Big House--if not bigger--for this weekend’s Alabama game.
UGA police have issued a counterfeit warning for a ticket scam for Saturday’s game between No. 3 Georgia and No. 8 Alabama after the LSU-Auburn game had a large number of bogus tickets sold.
Tickets are being sold at prime rates by online ticket brokers.
On TicketsNow.com, the average price is close to $400, the highest price for a college game this year. The top seats are going for as much as $642 with the less desirable seats at $256, according to an e-mail that hit my in-box.

Evans Q&A: On Munson and football broadcast future
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Mon, 09/22/2008 - 9:44pm.
To the left of my seat in the Sanford Stadium press box—some 20 feet away--Larry Munson has been a constant presence in the Georgia broadcast booth since I’ve been covering the team.
Munson won’t be there on Saturday. His retirement announcement was made on Monday, six days before his 86th birthday.
I spoke to Georgia athletic director Damon Evans tonight about Munson and the future of the football broadcast. Here are some excerpts:
Q: How did this come about that Larry is retiring?

Odds and ends from the desert
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Fri, 09/19/2008 - 3:47pm.
Think the Phoenix area isn’t hoping to cash in on the big football weekend here?
I walked into a store in a Scottsdale mall today that sold sports team merchandise. Front and center was Georgia gear.
Bulldogs athletic director Damon Evans would have loved it since he’s trying to spread Georgia’s brand name and logo to all corners of the nation, but I’ll bet the Bulldogs merchandise is no longer in such a prominent spot by Tuesday.
Here’s some odds and ends heading into Saturday’s game:
--Georgia’s Blair Walsh and Arizona State’s Thomas Weber are old kicking buddies.
“He’s a great guy. He’s a fantastic kicker,” Walsh said. “I’ve kicked with him many times out on Vegas. We’ll have a good pregame chat. I knew (Ryan) Succop from the same thing.”

Martinez Q&A: Arizona State and South Carolina
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Tue, 09/16/2008 - 8:06pm.
Georgia’s defense is gearing up to face Arizona State and quarterback Rudy Carpenter, who trails only Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell and Missouri’s Chase Daniel among active players in touchdown passes. Carpenter has 71.
Bulldogs defensive coordinator Willie Martinez answered questions from reporters after practice on Tuesday about the game ahead and a look back at some issues that cropped up late in the game against South Carolina.
Here are some excerpts:
Q: Richt mentioned that Rudy Carpenter’s completion percentage is higher when teams blitz.
A: That could be true. He does a good job when you bring pressure or a four-man pressure. He feels the pressure and does a nice job of pulling out of it. You watch him enough on film, he’s tough.
Q: What concerns presented themselves on South Carolina’s last two possessions? The majority of their yards came on their last two drives?

Dogs brace for long trip, different climate
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Mon, 09/15/2008 - 6:11pm.
A ranked team flies across country and has to adjust in a day to the time change and the weather.
Georgia can only hope that it fares better under this scenario at Arizona State than No. 23 California did when it flew to Maryland and lost 35-27 on Saturday. That’s right, to the same Terrapins team that lost at Middle Tennessee a week earlier.
(Full disclosure: Go Terps! As a graduate of College Park, I will be rooting for Maryland this week when they look to make it two in a row against that powerhouse Eastern Michigan squad. Now if we can get the basketball team going again).
Cal coach Jeff Tedford didn’t blame the loss on the long travel.
"There are no excuses whatsoever about coming east,” Tedford told the San Francisco Chronicle. “We were full of energy in the locker room. We were bright-eyed when we got up this morning. We came into the game with real good preparation.”

Door open for Henson return
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Fri, 09/05/2008 - 5:40pm.Mark Richt said Thursday that he was getting closer to making a decision on the future status on the team of suspended snapper Jeff Henson.
The Georgia coach might have been waiting on the decision today of a university judiciary panel, which cleared Henson of two charges of code of conduct violations. Richt should determine in the next few days whether Henson returns to the team.
Here's something that Richt already knows: He would love to see the kind of downfield blocking Saturday against Central Michigan that he saw against Georgia Southern.
Six different wide receivers caught passes in that game but what stood out to Richt is what they did away from the ball.
“What I loved about our receivers the most is how hard they blocked all game long,” Richt said. “Even towards the end of the game when we had some of the guys that weren’t starting, they came in and they blocked hard.”

World Wide Richt
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Wed, 09/03/2008 - 7:44pm.
Georgia coach Mark Richt is planning to blog at his new Web site, MarkRicht.com
He didn’t ask me, but here are some features that the Web site might want to include if it wants to give Georgia recruits and fans even more of the inside skinny.
1. Hook Up To Headset Audio. NASCAR lets gearheads listen in to talk between drivers and their pit crews for a fee. How about a live feed of Richt talking to offensive coordinator Mike Bobo on the headset? Too bad that wasn’t available after the Florida end zone celebration last season.
