Recruiting heats up this weekend
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Fri, 12/12/2008 - 3:17pm.
It’s a big recruiting weekend for Georgia.
The Bulldogs hold their Senior Gala at the Classic Center Saturday night during the most pivotal recruiting weekend in December.
“We’re still actively trying to recruit to fill six spots so you’re out there recruiting probably another 12 to 15 guys to accommodate those spots,” recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner said. “It’s pretty busy right now.”
Among targets still remaining for Georgia: linebacker Jarvis Jones from Columbus and corner back Branden Smith from Atlanta.
The weekends of Jan. 16 and 23rd also are slated to be busy weekends for recruits to come in for official visits.
Georgia can’t be certain the number of underclassmen that will leave for the NFL draft. Transfers and players who end their careers because of medical reasons also come up in the offseason.

Georgia addresses receiver need, for now
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Mon, 10/20/2008 - 8:50pm.
One down, one to go. Maybe.
Georgia coach Mark Richt mentioned a couple of weeks back after Walter Hill’s dismissal that the Bulldogs would like to sign at least two receivers in this next recruiting class.
Will new verbal Rantavious Wooten stick with Georgia after switching from LSU?
I spoke to the coach of the Glades Central (Fla.) receiver this afternoon. He told me that Wooten had indeed given Bulldogs coaches a commitment this weekend.
Wooten, of course, told LSU coaches back in August that he was going there.
Signing day remains a few months away.
I asked the coach, Jessie Hester, if Wooten is solid now?

CMU's Canadian Connections

Georgia fans might be sweating whether Matthew Stafford or Knowshon Moreno will make a jump to the NFL after this season.
Central Michigan fans already have a top draft pick in its starting lineup.
Offensive right tackle Greg Wojt was the No. 11 overall pick in the 2008 Canadian
Football League Draft by the Edmonton Eskimos.
Edmonton retains the rights to the Mississauga, Ontario native even though he’s playing his senior season for Central Michigan.
“In the Canadian Football League, there’s a quota on how many Americans you can have, and so obviously linemen become a premium,” coach Butch Jones said when I spoke to him by phone on Monday. “Greg’s been extremely consistent for us, very stable for us, done a good job for us.”

They're already No. 1 (Sort of)
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Tue, 07/15/2008 - 4:40pm.
Back in town from vacation, but still have a few days off to use before diving into the season to come.
Good to see that no Georgia players got into more trouble while I was away. Defensive end Michael Lemon did get tossed from the team. For now.
Today is sort of a national holiday for some.
It’s a big day in the world of video gamers. At least those into NCAA Football 09.
You know, the ones that showed up for midnight openings at Best Buy and other places to grab a copy of the game on its release date.
I played NCAA Football a few years ago, but truth be told, I haven’t really been into playing video games since my Intellivision broke a couple of decades ago.
Turns out Georgia is already top-ranked. In the EA Sports video game at least.
Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe is willing to fork over $60 to get his own.

The recruiting dance and other stuff

Catching up on some odds and ends from the past couple of weeks.
I was struck by the recruiting dance that Georgia assistants Mike Bobo and Stacy Searels had to go through to get a commitment last week from offensive lineman Austin Long from Memphis, Tenn.
Long told me that Bobo and Searels watched him lift weights at the school, but Long had to wait until he had left before calling to give his non-binding verbal commitment.
“We can’t really talk to the coaches right now,” Long said. “After I left, I called Coach Searels on the phone. I called and told him I wanted to be a Bulldog. I can call them, but they can only call me once a month.”
The NCAA evaluation period runs from April 15 to May 31. Coaches can’t have contact with recruits off campus and they can call a recruit only once during the recruiting period. Recruits can call coaches as often as they want at their expense.
