Let's kill all the lobbyists with our guns

More on this in my Sunday column, but I just had to share bits of a recent e-mail from a frequent correspondent, who shall remain nameless because, well, I'm getting a bit afraid.

Anyway, on to our story: The e-mail expressed displeasure with Wednesday's editorial, which suggested that Gov. Sonny Perdue should veto House Bill 89, which would allow firearms permit holders to carry concealed weapons on public transportation and into restaurants that serve alcohol (as long as they don't drink). The editorial contended that the measure should be vetoed because it's not particularly difficult or expensive to get a firearms permit in the state, and there's no requirement that a permit applicant demonstrate any proficiency with a weapon. The editorial suggested that fees associated with getting a firearms permit should be raised, that some demonstration of proficiency be required, and that permits be renewed annually instead of every five years.
