Will summer work pay off?

Gearing up here for Georgia’s preseason practices that get rolling on Monday afternoon.

Before the grind of August kicks in, Georgia’s coaches already have done a summer breakdown of opponents on their 2010 schedule.

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo explained earlier this month about the work that the coaching staff does to get ready for the season.

There’s a full breakdown on the first six opponents—Louisiana-Lafayette, South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Colorado and Tennessee. And an “in-depth look” at teams in the SEC East and Georgia Tech. Bobo said he takes about two or three days to study each opponent and comes up with a base gameplan that he puts on paper.

SEC Media Days: Day 2 With Georgia

HOOVER, Ala.--Welcome to Day 2 of SEC Media Days. Georgia is up today along with Arkansas, South Carolina and Vanderbilt.

We’ll be focused, of course, on the Bulldogs.

Coach Mark Richt will be joined by receiver A.J. Green, punter Drew Butler and fullback Shuan Chapas.

The local beat writers and some national scribes will meet with Richt shortly. The NCAA inquiry at Georgia and the issue of improper contacts between agents and players in college football are sure to come up.

--
Richt wouldn't concede that the NCAA inquiry is bad news for Georgia.

"I don’t know if it is or not quite frankly," he said. "I don’t necessarily think it is bad news."

He added: "I’m sure they’re gathering information, but we’ll see what they gather."

Asked whether the NCAA wanted to talk to one or more Georgia players, Richt said
"I don’t know at all. I’m actually asked to not make any comment about it."

Monday mishmash

Some quick items for a Monday:

--Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green is apparently a beast in the virtual world of “NCAA Football ‘11'” like he is in real life. I’m not a gamer, but this story has him with a 97 rating.

--Here’s a list of the quarterbacks slated to attend the Elite 11 camp in California. Georgia commitment Christian LeMay, who is appealing a 30-day school suspension, is not on the list.

While Vanderbilt moves on without Johnson, Belin settles in at UGA

Bobby Johnson’s sudden decision to retire as Vanderbilt’s football coach this week was a big story nationally in college football and, of course, in the Southeast.

Georgia inside linebackers coach Warren Belin, who worked under Johnson at Vanderbilt for eight seasons, said he got a text message of the news Wednesday before word got out.

“College football lost a good man,” Belin said. “The many years that I had to work with him I will treasure those and the friendship that we had.”

Belin resigned in early February and became inside linebackers coach at Georgia.
He coached linebackers during his time with the Commodores and for the past two years was recruiting coordinator.

While Johnson is retiring at a difficult place to win to spend more time with his wife Catherine, Vanderbilt’s assistant coaches will have at least this season to prove something before a new head coach is named.

Tyson No. 1 at nose, but Grantham wants to develop depth

DeAngelo Tyson will enter preseason camp holding down Georgia’s starting nose position in new coordinator Todd Grantham’s 3-4 defense, but the emergence of other players on the defensive line could have him playing elsewhere.

“I think DeAngelo did a good job in the spring,” Grantham said in a 20-minute session with reporters this afternoon. “He’s the No. 1, but I also think that he’s a guy that can give us flexibility and play an end position, too. Based upon how other guys come on both at nose and end, he can move, he can play. He’s a guy that will start out at nose. Based upon how other people play in training camp and as the season goes on, he can give us some flexibility and play either position.”

A wild card is 6-4, 330-pound Justin Anderson, who was injured in the spring but is moving from the offensive line to nose.

Suspended UGA running back Jackson to transfer

Suspended running back Dontavius Jackson won’t play again for Georgia.

The school announced Wednesday night that the redshirt sophomore from Franklin has decided to transfer after the summer semester.

The decision came four days after Jackson was arrested by university police on six misdemeanor charges including DUI, hit and run and underage possession of alcohol and three days after he was suspended by coach Mark Richt for at least the first six games of the season.

Jackson had four carries for 38 yards last season and was unlikely to get much playing time once he returned in a backfield that included Washaun Ealey, Caleb King and Carlton Thomas.

Starting wide receiver Tavarres King was suspended for a minimum of one game after being charged with underage possession of alcohol. He was a passenger in the car Saturday morning that Jackson was driving.

License issues continue for Bulldogs

Of the half dozen misdemeanor charges facing Georgia running back Dontavius Jackson from his Saturday morning arrest, violating the conditions of a learner’s permit would certainly rank well below a DUI and a hit and run.

Still, more than eight months after coach Mark Richt said he was “highly frustrated” with driver’s license issues for some of his players arrested, they apparently still remain.

According to the police incident report from the weekend in which receiver Tavarres King was also charged with underage possession of alcohol, Jackson was asked if he was aware that he had a Class D provisional license. He stated that “he was aware and that he had not had a chance to renew it yet.” The officer “then asked the driver if he was aware that he was not supposed to be driving at this time of night on a Class D license and he stated that he was aware.”

Richt suspends Jackson minimum six games, T. King minimum one game

Georgia’s offseason continued to be anything but quiet on Sunday when coach Mark Richt suspended two football players indefinitely from team activities, a day after their early morning arrests in Athens on alcohol-related charges.

Reserve running back Dontavius Jackson will have to sit out at least half the upcoming season—six games--after he was charged with six misdemeanors including DUI, leaving the scene of an accident and underage possession of alcohol.

Starting wide receiver Tavarres King will serve a minimum one-game suspension. King was charged with underage possession of alcohol.

“I’m disappointed in their decision-making and lack of judgment and they will both pay a stiff price,” Richt said in a statement released Sunday evening. “All our players need to understand that it’s a privilege to be a Bulldog and their conduct needs to reflect the standards we expect.”

UGA football players Jackson, T. King arrested (UPDATES)

Georgia football players Dontavius Jackson and Tavarres King were arrested early this morning by university police on alcohol-related charges after the vehicle they were in was pulled over on East Campus Road.

Jackson, a backup running back, was charged with six misdemeanors, including driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident and underage possession of alcohol. King, a returning starter at wide receiver, was charged with underage possession of alcohol.

Jackson was driving a Chevrolet Avalanche that belonged to King when officers noticed he did not move over for a separate police stop on the road and was traveling at a high rate of speed, university police chief Jimmy Williamson said. Two police vehicles were at that stop and one left to pull over the Avalanche at about 3 a.m.

Da’Rick Rogers already making news in Knoxville

Georgia fans (and some players) have been eagerly anticipating Tennessee coming to town on Oct. 9 so the Bulldogs defense can get its shots in on Da'Rick Rogers, who backed away from a Bulldogs commitment and signed with the Vols.

Now it’s no longer a certainty that the former Calhoun receiver will be making a visit to Sanford Stadium after he was arrested early this morning on a charge of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest in Knoxville, according to GoVolsxtra.com

At the very least, Derek Dooley will have to deal with the headache of this bar brawl, not Mark Richt.

Wonder what Bulldogs safety Baccari Rambo, who had a back and forth with Rogers on Facebook and Twitter, thinks of all of this?

Some other news of note heading into the weekend:
