Conditioning accident `nothing bad' for QB Murray
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Fri, 07/30/2010 - 10:14am.Georgia will enter preseason camp on Monday with just three scholarship quarterbacks on its roster.
About the last thing it can afford is to lose starter Aaron Murray to injury.
It’s a good thing for the Bulldogs that what Murray described as a “conditioning accident” left the redshirt freshman sporting only a shiny purple bruise under his left eye this week. He said it won’t keep him off the practice field.
Murray said it happened during an agility drill on Tuesday called `Chase the Rabbit.’
“One person has a belt connected to another person with a belt and the belt can break,” Murray said. “If you’re the chaser, you don’t want the belt to break and if you’re the rabbit you want to juke the guy behind you and have the belt break. I was the chaser and I got too close at the start to the guy and it went straight to the cheek.”
When you’re the starting quarterback at Georgia, even minor injuries will get attention.

Will summer work pay off?
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Thu, 07/29/2010 - 10:00am.Gearing up here for Georgia’s preseason practices that get rolling on Monday afternoon.
Before the grind of August kicks in, Georgia’s coaches already have done a summer breakdown of opponents on their 2010 schedule.
Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo explained earlier this month about the work that the coaching staff does to get ready for the season.
There’s a full breakdown on the first six opponents—Louisiana-Lafayette, South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Colorado and Tennessee. And an “in-depth look” at teams in the SEC East and Georgia Tech. Bobo said he takes about two or three days to study each opponent and comes up with a base gameplan that he puts on paper.

News on hoops schedule (including opener) and Trey's trip to Vegas
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Wed, 07/28/2010 - 9:52am.Georgia’s 2010-11 men’s basketball schedule isn’t yet out but its season opener will be against Mississippi Valley State at 7 p.m. on Nov. 12 in Stegeman Coliseum.
The Southwestern Athletic Conference school announced that date on its website. The Delta Devils went 8-21 last season.
Georgia will also get a visit this coming season from Xavier, according to a tweet from Musketeers coach Chris Mack earlier this month.
“Get your plane tickets to Athens, GA for February X fans,” he wrote.
Georgia coach Mark Fox said he didn’t know if the contract with Xavier was signed yet, but said that “it’s in the works.”
The pairings for the Old Spice Classic on Thanksgiving weekend in Orlando have not yet been announced, but it looks like a Notre Dame-Georgia matchup in the opening round, according to a tweet from the Irish’s beat writer for the South Bend Tribune (h/t Georgia Sports Blog).

UGA LB Akeem Dent out 4 to 6 weeks with toe injury
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Tue, 07/27/2010 - 7:48am.Georgia starting linebacker Akeem Dent is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks after undergoing outpatient surgery this morning at St. Mary’s Hospital for a toe injury.
The senior sustained the injury to his left first toe in an off-field accident last week, according to Georgia associate athletic director Claude Felton.
Dent will miss at least three weeks of preseason practice and his availability for the Bulldogs season opener against La.-Lafayette on Sept. 4 is in question. Georgia starts preseason practices on Monday.
Dent was the starting “Mike” inside linebacker for the Bulldogs. He made 32 tackles last season in eight games.
“If he went down, Christian Robinson would move over and (Marcus) Dowtin would move up,” inside linebackers coach Warren Belin said earlier this month.

SEC Media Days: UGA picked second in East
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Fri, 07/23/2010 - 7:19am.HOOVER, Ala.--We wrap up here today with Day 3 of SEC Media Days. The media vote for the All-SEC and predicated order of finish is out.
Here's a story that I filed:
HOOVER, Ala.—Quarterback Tim Tebow may be gone from Florida, but Georgia is still projected to finish second in the Southeastern Conference’s Eastern Division, according to the vote released Friday as SEC Media Days wrapped up.
Florida garnered 1,030 points, well ahead of the Bulldogs. Georgia just edged out South Carolina for second in the East vote (791 points to 790), tied for the second closest voting margin since 1992.
The Gators return 11 starters total on offense and defense including center Mike Pouncey and safety Ahmad Black.
Georgia has every starter back on offense except at quarterback where redshirt freshman Aaron Murray takes over. The Bulldogs are switching to a 3-4 scheme after a defensive staff overhaul following an 8-5 season.

SEC Media Days: Day 2 With Georgia
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Thu, 07/22/2010 - 7:34am.HOOVER, Ala.--Welcome to Day 2 of SEC Media Days. Georgia is up today along with Arkansas, South Carolina and Vanderbilt.
We’ll be focused, of course, on the Bulldogs.
Coach Mark Richt will be joined by receiver A.J. Green, punter Drew Butler and fullback Shuan Chapas.
The local beat writers and some national scribes will meet with Richt shortly. The NCAA inquiry at Georgia and the issue of improper contacts between agents and players in college football are sure to come up.
--
Richt wouldn't concede that the NCAA inquiry is bad news for Georgia.
"I don’t know if it is or not quite frankly," he said. "I don’t necessarily think it is bad news."
He added: "I’m sure they’re gathering information, but we’ll see what they gather."
Asked whether the NCAA wanted to talk to one or more Georgia players, Richt said
"I don’t know at all. I’m actually asked to not make any comment about it."

NCAA to conduct `inquiry' at Georgia (UPDATES WITH AJ GREEN COMMENTS)
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Wed, 07/21/2010 - 5:36pm.HOOVER, Ala.— The NCAA informed Georgia late Wednesday afternoon that it wanted to send investigators to campus to conduct an inquiry. Star receiver A.J. Green told the Athens Banner-Herald that athletic department officials this week asked him whether he attended a party in Miami over Memorial Day weekend hosted by a sports agent and he told them no.
“I was home that weekend,” said the junior from Summerville, S.C. “There was a buzz going around that I went. I talked to them a couple of days ago. Like two days ago.”
Green, a projected top-10 NFL draft pick, said coach Mark Richt and Georgia’s compliance office asked him about the trip to Florida.
Asked if he had ever been to Miami, Green said: “Never.”
The NCAA’s interest in Georgia comes at a time when it has been looking into improper contacts between agents and football players at Florida, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina.

SEC Media Days: Day 1
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Wed, 07/21/2010 - 12:30pm.HOOVER, Ala--Greetings from SEC Media Days, where Alabama and Florida are the headliners on the first day.
So far the media is grumbling a good bit because of major wireless issues here. I'm on my trusty wireless phone card.
Some quick news on the gametime for the UGA opener.
Here's a story I just sent in for our website:
Get ready for another early September kickoff for the Georgia football team.
The Bulldogs season opener on Sept. 4 against Louisiana-Lafayette at Sanford Stadium is set for 12:21 p.m. and will be shown on the SEC Network, Georgia announced today.
The Bulldogs already have noon kickoffs for Sept. 11 at South Carolina and Sept. 18 against Arkansas at home. Those games will air either on ESPN or ESPN2.
Also today, ESPN announced its on air lineups for its SEC games this season.
Former Georgia All-American David Pollack will serve as an analyst on the noon game on ESPNU. Rob Stone will work with Pollack and call play-by-play.

Six UGA players make coaches' preseason All-SEC squad, but none on defense
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Tue, 07/20/2010 - 11:04am.Six Georgia players landed on the coaches' preseason All-SEC football team that was revealed this morning during a live chat on the league’s official website.
Wide receiver A.J. Green, offensive lineman Clint Boling, punter Drew Butler and kicker Blair Walsh were named to the first team. Offensive lineman Cordy Glenn and kick returner Brandon Boykin were selected to the second team.
No Georgia players were selected on the first- or second-team defense.
Take these for what they’re worth.
Remember last year Alabama running back Mark Ingram was third-team preseason All-SEC and ended up winning the Heisman Trophy. (There is no third team this year).
Butler and Walsh were nowhere to be found in the preseason list last year, but Butler made first-team All-SEC and Walsh was on the second-team postseason list.
Florida led all teams with 10 total selections in the preseason voting this year. Alabama had nine and Georgia and Auburn tied for third with six.
