Kemp opponent looks to turn out Christians

Doug MacGinnitie, the Sandy Springs Republican who is mounting a primary to challenge to Secretary of State Brian Kemp, has brought former Georgia Christian Alliance leader Sadie Fields on board his campaign.

Fields, perhaps the most influential Christian conservative in the state, will probably be put in charge of voter turnout for Team MacGinnitie, according to Jim Galloway.

Fields was the driving force behind the 2004 constitutional amendment banning gay marriage that helped sweep Republicans into power. Will MacGinnitie inject similar moral issues into the campaign?

A double entendre

We surround Brian Kemp

Call it a sign of the times. A candidate for statewide office is trumpeting his endorsement by a group of Glenn Beck acolytes.

Doug MacGinnitie, a Republican running for secretary of state against incumbent Brian Kemp, announced today that the Cobb County chapter of the 912 Project endorsed him. The 912 project was founded by Glenn Beck, the misty-eyed Fox News and syndicated radio host, gold pitchman, chalkboard-lover and sworn enemy of Woodrow Wilson. From Team MacG:

Republican says his party's health care plan is a bad idea

Right now, states regulate the insurance industry, and every state has its own set of laws that dictate what types of policies insurance companies must offer consumers. Under Democrats’ plans for health care reform, the federal government would take over much of that regulatory burden.

Obviously, conservatives don’t want that. A centerpiece of Republicans’ alternatives is allowing insurance companies to sell plans across state lines. In Georgia, Senate Bill 309 would allow Georgians to purchase plans from out of state.

As Stephen Northington, a Republican candidate for state insurance commissioner, pointed out today, that’s a really bad idea.

Kemp faces tough fight to keep SoS job

Despite enjoying the trappings of incumbency since Gov. Sonny Perdue appointed him secretary of state last week, Brian Kemp is not a lock to keep the job. Sandy Springs City Council Doug MacGinnitie will have the resources to mount a serious challenge in the Republican primary.

McGinnitie has actually out-fundraised Kemp, who filed his campaign finance disclosure too late on Friday for this story.

“I am humbled by the tremendous support we’ve received from across the state,” MacGinnitie said in a news release. “After less than a year of campaigning, we raised more money than a two-term state senator who has already ran a statewide campaign. This is a great sign of our campaign’s growing momentum.”

Here's a first

Your iPhone is no longer good for just texting, playing video games, looking up funny cat videos and, oh yeah, calling people. You can now get updates on Republic Doug MacGinnitie’s campaign for Georgia secretary of state!

MacGinnitie just announced that he is launching a campaign iPhone app. If that’s not reason enough to spend $200 on a phone, I don’t know what is.

“I’m proud to launch this tool today that will help connect our campaign with supporters statewide,” MacGinnitie said. “One of my goals throughout this campaign and in office is to take a private sector approach, including new technology to improve efficiency.”
