Tuesday spring practice update
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Tue, 03/30/2010 - 4:27pm.When Georgia returned to the practice field this afternoon, several players who missed Saturday’s scrimmage were back going through drills on a 70 degree day.
I saw outside linebacker Justin Houston (shoulder), tight end Bruce Figgins (hamstring) and receiver Israel Troupe (hamstring) practice in a regular jersey for the full pads practice. Figgins hauled in a pass across the middle from Logan Gray in one drill.
Receiver Marlon Brown (shoulder) was working with the receivers in a green non-contact jersey.
Offensive tackle A.J. Harmon was on crutches. He’s out for the spring with a high ankle sprain sustained in the scrimmage. There’s been another 33 in green recently, but I was told that it’s not linebacker Chase Vasser but walk-on Cameron Allen.
No surprise, there wasn’t any noticeable change in the way the quarterbacks were handled after the scrimmage.

Tuesday practice report (UPDATES on Anderson position move, Mettenberger)
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Tue, 03/23/2010 - 4:18pm.Georgia coach Mark Richt had no shortage of news to offer reporters after Tuesday's practice:
--Offensive tackle Justin Anderson is moving to the defensive line. He’s going to line up initially at the nose position, but he’s out for the spring with a shoulder injury.
“I think he’ll do well," Richt said. "He’s a real explosive athlete. A big, strong kid. We think it will fit him good.”
The 6-foot-5, 330-pound redshirt junior will start to get to know the 3-4 defense now.
“We’re not going to be able to really see him do what we need to see, but he’s at least going to begin to learn the terminology and learn the position," Richt said. "He knows if we lose a tackle or two offensively, he knows he would have to come back. Right now, if everybody who’s projected to be healthy will come in healthy and make it through camp and all, we’ll probably keep him on defense.”

Practice report: A.J. among those returning punts, OL injuries, new-look defense
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Sat, 03/20/2010 - 10:55am.Just back from Georgia’s practice over at Stanford Stadium on a gorgeous Saturday morning.
We got to see about 30 minutes of work in the early stages of the first practice in full pads. There were about 70 or so in the stands watching on another of the Bulldogs’ junior days. The recruits rolled in before we left.
More than a half dozen players worked on punt returns although there actually wasn’t anyone punting. The ball was thrown up in the air for the returners.
No, Logan Gray wasn’t one of the punt returners. The simulated punts landed at about midfield.
A.J. Green, Carlton Thomas, Washaun Ealey, Bacarri Rambo, Brandon Boykin, Branden Smith and Rantavious Wooten took turns on punt returns.
"I hope they give me a chance back there," Green said. "It will be fun. It will just add another dimension to my game.”
From my eyes, Smith and Rambo showed the most explosion.

Thursday practice report (UPDATED)
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Thu, 03/18/2010 - 4:49pm.It didn't take long for Richard Samuel to make another position change.
The converted running back was working at inside linebacker on Thursday after beginning spring practice at outside linebacker.
“I think he’s a natural,” defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said. “He can run. He can cover. Playing inside, you can still blitz as an inside guy, but there’s a little bit more of a coverage element involved and that would utlize his speed.”
Said Coach Mark Richt: "We started him outside a little bit because of some depth issues at the outside linebacker position, but to get him a more fair opportunity we moved him inside.”

QBs, DBs and energy
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Fri, 03/05/2010 - 10:53am.Some leftover morsels today from Georgia’s first day of spring practice yesterday.
The team won’t go again until March 16 after spring break.
--Logan Gray admitted that he wished he would have had a chance to compete for the starting job last spring. Matthew Stafford left for the NFL and coaches installed Joe Cox as the starter right away.
“After Matthew left and they named Joe the starter immediately, I kind of wished that I would have had a chance to compete for the job,” said Gray, who is competing with Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger for the top spot. “Ultimately, it doesn’t matter who’s named the starter, whoever’s competing the best and playing the best is going to play. I think it’s just another opportunity for me to try to prove myself as the guy who’s going to be the next starting quarterback. I’m sure Aaron and Zach are thinking the same way.”

Dogs become spring focus
Submitted by Marc Weiszer on Tue, 03/17/2009 - 10:09pm.
A crazy scene on the first day of spring practice.
Matthew Stafford leaves and suddenly senior receiver Kris Durham is surrounded by TV cameras--five in all.
“I don’t know how he does it,” Durham said after the TV cameras had moved on to another player in the team meeting room. “That’s kind of intimidating. I was a little intimidated walking up and seeing all of those cameras."
There was a media contingent of more than 30 people for a practice in shorts.
“It’s good to see everybody back,” coach Mark Richt said at his postpractice press conference. “More faces than usual. That’s good for Georgia.”
Yes, Georgia football is pretty big in this state.
It was a day for quarterback Joe Cox and tailback Caleb King to move into new roles as first-teamers.
