Bobby Saxon, reporting for duty

Blake Aued's picture

Bobby Saxon serves in the Georgia National Guard. And did he mention he was in Iraq? Also, he is a major.

Saxon, not to be confused with fictional presidential candidate Matt Santos, reported for a mandatory two-week National Guard training session at Fort Dix over the weekend and sent out a press release about it, taking the opportunity to highlight some of Paul Broun’s votes and Barry Fleming’s lack of military experience.

“Unfortunately, it appears that not every candidate in the race has the experience to make good decisions for our men and women in uniform,” campaign manager George Birchby quotes himself as saying. “Despite having served honorably in the Marines, our freshman Congressman had the audacity to vote against vital educational and financial benefits for our veterans. His primary opponent, who has never served a day in uniform, is content to support the failed big government policies that continue to place our troops in harm’s way and threaten to devastate America’s economic security.”

So, I pose this question to you, my faithful lieutenants in the Loopwabian Nation: Does this have any legs?

Broun’s “boob ban,” a bill that would outlaw the sale of Playboys on military bases, is very unpopular with the soldiers, from what I hear. On the other hand, prior to that, veterans I’ve spoken to were definitely warming up to him.

Fleming has taken Broun to task for some of the same stances, but I’m wondering whether veterans will respect those criticisms from a man who’s never served in uniform.

Paul will beat him like a

Paul will beat him like a drum in the 10th district.

Let me speak as a vetaran

and the father of a current Army officer. I don't give two hoots in H#ll about Playboy, and the accusation of voting against educational benefits and financial benefits for our veterans? Bobby knows better than this garbage and he is pandering.

If Saxon is recognizing Broun as his opponent in the General, he is right.

Veterans are more populous in Augusta than here

I do not pretend to know the percentage of Augusta area military personnel who are registered in Richmond County (or where ever), but it would stand to reason that they would vote for one of their own in the military as much if not more than they would for Broun or Fleming.

Face it, you're looking at a Obama-Clinton onslaught in the November election which will bring out many voters who have never voted before. This will have down ticket implications everywhere. Bobby is not pandering (if you read the quote it is from his campaign chair). He is a dedicated soldier and father. He is a man of strong leadership and deserving of your respect if not support. I appreciate your support of your son and your service to our country, Bowersville, but at least please consider extending the same courtesy to someone else who decided to serve their country in Saxon.

Bobby Saxon, as an Oconee County native, should be invited to speak at the July 4th dedication of the Oconee County Veterans Memorial in the newly renamed Oconee Veterans Park in the Eastville community near Butler's Crossing in unincorporated Oconee County, Georgia.

I double dawg dare the nearly all GOP member monument committee to invite a few more Democratic Veterans to their goings-on. Inviting Bobby Saxon or Max Cleland to speak at their dedication would be a good start.

Looking at girlie magazines is a time honored military tradition that should not be tinkered with on the PX or otherwise. Freedom of speech, baby. Free the boobs!

Well, Soldiers...

...can't be trusted to make choices for themselves, Dan. Especially where the choice is a "moral," "Constitutional," or what was the other litmus test Broun claimed? I suppose reading (sic) Playboy doesn't pass the "moral" test? But does telling grown men and women what they can and can't read pass the "Constitutional" test?

I wonder how those elitists in Palm Beach would feel if soldiers could tune in Rush or buy Ann Coulter's drivel at the base exchange?

Their uniforms look better too.

I'm thinking that Saxon is treading on some pretty thin ice there, at least with respect to Broun.

Being a weekend warrior hardly gives one superior insight into military affairs over a bona fide widow making Marine.

Among the immortal words of Gunny Sgt. Hartman, "[Broun is ] a minister of death praying for war."

I'm pretty sure Saxon could

I'm pretty sure Saxon could kill me with his bare hands. Broun, not so much, although he could heal me with his bare hands.

Miltary experience?

Since when is that required. Saxon obviously does not know his history...seeing as how he failed the 1st grade, it is no suprise (look it up). The single most corrupt presidential administration in history, aside from Bush II, was General Grant's presidential administration.

Sure Fleming lacks military experience, but Saxon lacks intelligence. One of those attributes is important in Congress.

The "boob ban" is ridiculous though.

Bowersville, Saxon does not know better. A professional campaign would have the polling data and professional research conducted to lead a political strategy in a winning direction. A bunch of inexperienced student interns and a county party chair hardly make up a winning, not to mention amateur, campaign. He also has no money...so there will be no professional research or polling or media.

I am beginning to doubt Fleming a little bit too. Primaries are only 6 weeks away though, time will tell...but something tells me that July will be all about Barry Fleming and PAul Broun will only exist on campaign signs and road signs on the 10 loop.

Campaign signs are illegal on the 10 Loop in Clarke

and I don't recall seeing any in Oconee

Dan Matthews

State action

Campaign signs are prohibited on any state ROW.

...

I was refering to the signs that read:

Paul Broun Parkway

Those are still up, aren't they?

You know, a lot of people think that Congressman Paul Broun is his father. They do not know that the good Paul Broun Sr. passed away and that they are stuck with somebody that values nothing.

How could that be?

Broun Sr. would be in his 90s by now.

Bring back the literacy tests.

They do not know that the good Paul Broun Sr. passed away and that they are stuck with somebody that values nothing.

Those people (both of them) just shouldn't be allowed to vote anyway.

I definitely think that

I definitely think that military experience counts for something, certainly in a district so heavily populated by veterans. Will that be a defining factor in how people vote? Probably not.

Bobby Saxon is a hero for his service and to play up these accusations about his intelligence is disgusting.

Lets not get to liberal

with the use of the word hero.

It is completely legitimate to bring up the merits of his mental faculties.

They are not accusations.

sanderlinsghost...no, they should not be allowed to vote, but if we keep tacking on voting requirements to people's intelligence then one of the candidates in this contest would not be able to vote. The 10th district would be a safe democratic district as well.

Congressman Paul Broun M.D.

served in the USMC.

Jacob, your contempt for the people of the 10th is discernible

Whether you are condemning congressional candidates for their elementary educational background or questioning the intelligence of the masses looking through rose colored glasses on the By-Pass. Anyone who serves their country well is a hero to me. Your long distance character assassination attempts on Major Saxon are ungrounded, sour grapes and should cease and desist immediately. I think you meant "too liberal" in your last headline post. That is one thing we won't ever have to worry about here in the 10th thanks to people like you.

Rev. Davidson just misspoke about the Oconee Veterans Memorial at the Oconee Veterans Park on Tim Bryant's show. The Oconee County Complex has been renamed the Oconee Veterans Park and I could tell he meant to say it that way.

Dan Matthews

Agreed, Dan. We should

Agreed, Dan. We should respect the service of those who belong to the military. And as Albert points out, Paul Broun was in the military, too. I'll even say I honestly respect his military service, though his service in Congress has not been nearly as meritorious.

Jacob's intelligence

Jacob, I had first thought about questioning your intelligence, especially seeing your grammatical and capitalization errors in your comments, however, you keep doing a pretty good job of showing your stupidity every time you write a comment. So, I will just let you continue making yourself look like an idiot....maybe you should have been held back in 1st grade. Thank GOD your not campaigning for anything!

This just in from Osama Bin Fleming's lastest slick mailer

Paul Broun is a terrorist appeaser who just said no to families of Americans killed by Al-Qaeda on American soil even before the Bush administration ignored their own intelligence three frickin' years before 9/11
