Broun supports civil rights

Flagpole magazine carries a short piece implying that, like Kentucky Senate candidate Rand Paul, Rep. Paul Broun doesn’t support the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act that banned segregated businesses.

Paul’s views – since retracted – “are shared by our own congressman,” author Matthew Pulver quoted Broun’s Democratic opponent, Russell Edwards, as saying. Pulver goes on to speculate that Broun believes businesses can “run roughshod over civil rights and the environment.”

At least on civil rights, he’s wrong. I asked Broun – who cites the British abolitionist William Wilberforce as his hero – today about his views on the law. He supports it.

“Anyone who knows me knows I am totally against discrimination,” Broun said. “Every American ought to have equal rights.”

People in Athens can and do say a lot of things about Broun, but don't call him a racist.

"Ought to." But then how do you go about implementing that ought from the standpoint of government?

Zeros and Ones

I'm often surprised when a publication reads something like Rand Paul's nuanced answer to a complicated question, and reduces it to a two-word summary.

It's no wonder that political discourse is so fractured and polarized...we are not allowed to think any way except binary. Paul Broun is either completely crazy or a second Alexander Hamilton.

You know, despite this machine in front of me, it's still an analog world...

What is 75% to 25% Alex?

The question to the answer on Jeopardy "What was the margin of victory in the Paul Broun vs Russell Edwards race.

No he is not a second Alexander Hamilton

I am distant descendant of Alexander Hamilton. Mr. Broun is no Alexander Hamilton.

Are you sure?

Are you sure, Dan? You and the good doctor kind of resemble one another...

You must need glasses Snoddy

I have never been told I resemble Dr. Broun, even after talking to him at Athens Academy football games. I wear glasses 100% of the time and am mostly bald even when I do not shave my head. Last time I saw the Congressman exiting LaVista Road, he was neither, although I think he does wear reading glass. I think you might have me confused with someone else.

And now back to our regular programming

Matt Towery has become sort of AJC's go to man, and sometime contributor to the ABH.

Apparently not everyone thinks as highly of Matt as Matt does.

And here is an explanation of the analysis used to arrive that conclusion, which will make even the most wonkish wonk's eyes glaze over.

Towery asked for the polls that he missed, and Nate Silver provided them,

As far as the Georgia

As far as the Georgia Democratic primary, at least part of the reason they missed so badly is that they polled while John Edwards was still in the race. I suspect Edwards would have pulled about 20 percent of the vote, and most Edwards voters I talked to switched over to Obama when he dropped out.

Um, Danny..

"I have never been told I resemble Dr. Broun"

You just were. Didn't you read the comment to which you replied? I think you need new glasses...
