Richt on depth chart timing, walk-ons and `The Hit Man'

If only Georgia football coach Mark Richt had delayed revealing his quarterback pecking order until August, he just might have had a more restful week.

“Maybe the dumbest thing I did is put the depth chart out,” Richt told the Greater Augusta Bulldog Club Thursday night at the Julian Smith Casino. “Everybody got bent out of shape about that.”

Will junior Logan Gray transfer or stick around Athens? That’s still to be determined after the Bulldogs' No. 2 quarterback behind Aaron Murray met with Richt on Monday

Richt wouldn’t answer a question posed to him about what contingency plans might be in place if the Bulldogs are down to two scholarship quarterbacks should Gray leave.

“If he leaves, then I’ll decide what to do then,” Richt said before the event started.

Later, he told the crowd of more than 300: “We’re getting calls from walk-on quarterbacks around the nation right now.”

Richt addressed the Gray issue in Savannah Wednesday and on Thursday in Augusta and on the SEC teleconference.

“Everybody probably wants to know `What’s Logan doing?” Richt said. “I don’t know what Logan’s doing. …We’re a much better team with him than without him.”

Georgia basketball coach Mark Fox said the Bulldogs aren’t close to lining up a game with Miami next season. Hurricanes coach Frank Haith had mentioned Georgia as a possible opponent recently to media in South Florida.

“We haven’t had any serious talks about that,” said Fox, who sounded open to such a matchup. “We’re looking for some BCS major conference teams that will come to Athens.”

That might be harder to do after Georgia knocked off Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech last season at home.

“The problem is right now last year everybody wanted to play us,” Fox said. “Now that we’re going to be better, they’re not so excited about that.”

Other tidbits:
--Richt on safety Jakar Hamilton: “His nickname is `The Hit Man.’ We’re talking about just tackling people, nothing else.”

--Fox on a perk that Richt gets: “You look at football coaches. How cool would it be to coach a game in sunglasses?”

--Richt on whether Branden Smith will get touches on offense again: “We’ll continue to find ways to get him in the game and get him return work.” Richt noted that Smith will get more work at cornerback, where he's a top backup.

--Georgia offensive tackle Clint Boling and outside linebacker Justin Houston are on the preliminary watch list for the Rotary Lombardi Award, which goes to the nation’s top down lineman or linebacker who set up no father than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage.
