Practice report: A.J. among those returning punts, OL injuries, new-look defense

Just back from Georgia’s practice over at Stanford Stadium on a gorgeous Saturday morning.

We got to see about 30 minutes of work in the early stages of the first practice in full pads. There were about 70 or so in the stands watching on another of the Bulldogs’ junior days. The recruits rolled in before we left.

More than a half dozen players worked on punt returns although there actually wasn’t anyone punting. The ball was thrown up in the air for the returners.

No, Logan Gray wasn’t one of the punt returners. The simulated punts landed at about midfield.

A.J. Green, Carlton Thomas, Washaun Ealey, Bacarri Rambo, Brandon Boykin, Branden Smith and Rantavious Wooten took turns on punt returns.

"I hope they give me a chance back there," Green said. "It will be fun. It will just add another dimension to my game.”

From my eyes, Smith and Rambo showed the most explosion.

Other tidbits:
--Receiver Marlon Brown said he sustained a “little bruised shoulder,” Saturday, and said he’s unsure if he’ll practice Tuesday. “I’ll be all right,” he said. “I just fell on it wrong.”

--Watched the first-team defense line up early in practice. Abry Jones was the nose with DeAngelo Tyson and Cornelius Washington lining up next to him. Kiante Tripp also worked in at end. Justin Houston lined up at OLB with Akeem Dent and Darryl Gamble as the ILB. The secondary was the same as it’s been with Rambo, Shawn Williams, Vance Cuff and Boykin. I didn't notice Jakar Hamilton, who had a minor foot injury earlier this week, with the second unit. Nick Williams and Makiri Pugh were the backup safeties.

--The offensive line dominated the guys in green (non-contact). The list included Trinton Sturdivant (knee), Tanner Strickland (shoulder), Justin Anderson (shoulder) and Austin Long (back). Sturdivant wore a brace on his left knee and was working on the side .He got some individual attention from head trainer Ron Courson, who helped him stretch out his legs. The only non-offensive lineman I noticed in green was Fred Munzenmaier (shoulder).

--It was Logan Gray's turn to take the first snaps with the starting unit at quarterback. A.J., Tavarres King and Kris Durham lined up as starting receivers.

--We were behind the hedges so couldn't hear much of the on field banter. Defensive lineman Derrick Lott did run on the field in a good mood, singing "All the Way Turned Up."
