Are you qualified?

Blake Aued's picture

With just seven hours of qualifying left, only two Clarke County races are contested. I got a tip this afternoon that Michael Coleman is taking another crack at Chief Magistrate Patricia Barron. Sonny Wilson is running against Coronor Bobby Tribble.

I don't know Coleman, but it seems like most people either love Judge Barron or hate her. I don't know Wilson, either, but I can't image voters care too much about who the coroner is.

Qualifying for the mayor's race won't be until June 2010, but I'm already hearing lots of names thrown around, including Charlie Maddox, Elton Dodson, Kelly Girtz, Alice Kinman, Nancy Denson, Jack Lumpkin, Gwen O'Looney and Doc Eldridge. Charlie is definitely in, Elton, Kelly and Alice say they're out, and Doc will neither confirm nor deny, but is happy that rumors are being mongered.

Discuss.

Charlie? Are you serious?

Charlie? Are you serious?

Gwen? Are you serious.

I thought her political career was flushed down the toilet with the pot.

The answer to both questions

The answer to both questions is yes.

Charlie has been saying he'll run again since pretty much the day after the last election.

Gwen was a little more vague - sounding eerily like Tom Chasteen, she says we're out of balance - but is thinking about it, depending on who else decides to run.

There is a student already announced named Brandon Shinholser

An intriguing mix of libertarian and liberal is young Mr. Shinholser from Dublin, ancestoral home of William Collins Matthews, my granddad.

Shinholser, who first spoke at a NORML gathering two years ago, will be speaking 9:45 pm Saturday at the Human Rights Festival - he has filled out the requisite paper work to raise funds.

Is this kid for real, or is he just messing around (cough cough andyrusk cough toddbak)?

I am fairly confident

I am fairly confident Girtz's wife would not stand for him running for mayor.

And why the heck won't someone run against Ira Edwards???

The chair motions that we all get stoned. Do I hear a second?

Shinholser must be running to protest Gwen flushing the pot.

The chair can't make a

The chair can't make a motion. But if she did, Kelly Girtz would second it.

I also protest flushing the pot ... but for a completely different reason.

I know, very disappointing. The guy's just a lousy Sheriff. No ifs, ands, or buts.

declared candidacy

My name is Brandon Shinholser and I am twenty-one years of age. I attended Middle Georgia College for one and a half years and moved to Athens to seek opportunities in the real world. I will be taking classes throughout this race to complete my degree. I first spoke at the NORML benefit show two weeks ago, and gave a speech tonight at the Human Rights Festival. My stance on current issues can be found on my website and for any other questions, please feel free to contact me at shinholserbl@gmail.com.

For the record, I must correct Dan Matthews on the fact that I am not running as a liberal or libertarian. The race for mayor is non-partisan, but my views learn towards the Centrist Party ideas. For more information on the Centrist platform, please visit http://www.uscentrist.org/. I would also like to thank Dan Matthews for mentioning my name as a mayoral candidate.

Welcome

Hey Brandon, welcome to In the Loop. Please feel free to post and contribute, but we've got a couple rules around here. One is that I don't like candidates talking about themselves. Buy an ad if you want to pimp your Web site. Otherwise, let it all hang out.

In the Loop

Thank you for the welcome message, Blake. I definitely understand your rules. Buy an ad? have you seen the economy! Just kidding. I look forward to being involved on this site, and I respect your post.

Thanks,
Brandon.

Glad to have you

Saw your speech at the Human Rights Festival on Saturday, BTW.

thanks

Yeah, I definitely could have done a bit better! One thing I always say is stay positive and speak positive, but I honestly should have detailed my wordings a little better. I know that it's going to take time and practice, but I had a good time. A lot of people had a word with me downtown, and all was positive. That was my second time at the Human Rights Festival, and they have once again done a very good job! Did you enjoy the festivities?

Coroner's race should be important!

I know there aren't many people who would care about the Coroner's race...but i do(!) and if you have a loved one die of 'mysterious' causes you would want someone who knows what they are doing in that office too. I waited for the current Coroner to sign my father's death certificate for almost 5 months. I couldn't settle an estate, insurance was left in limbo everything was on hold until I got a signature from Mr. Tribble. If Sonny is promising to have 'paperwork' to the families in a timely manner then everyone who lives in Athens should vote for him. I have friends and family who know him, although I have not personally met him, no one has had a bad thing to say about him. Plus, why isn't there more talk about Tribble living in Oconee County....when did that become acceptable? I have heard more, than was in the paper, about him signing a note using his house as collateral, and he stated in the hearing before the Board of Elections that he did not own the house it belonged to his wife, isn't that a federal offense to use something you don't own as collateral? I know that the Coroner's race isn't a big deal to the citizen's of Athen-Clarke Coutny but I feel it should be....something has to change for us grieveing citizens.
