Players embrace new scheme (w/offseason surgery update)

Georgia defensive players haven’t even met new coordinator Todd Grantham, but they are already imagining how they might fit into the 3-4 scheme he is bringing to Athens.

Defensive tackle Abry Jones was talking today about how he sees himself possibly as a defensive end in the alignment that uses three down linemen and four linebackers.

Safety Bacarri Rambo spoke of pass rushers that played end now getting after the quarterback from the outside linebacker position.

“This 3-4 defense will be a great scheme if that’s what we run because you can do so much out of it,” Rambo said. “We’ve got a lot players that can play all those positions. You’ve got Justin Houston and (Demarcus) Dobbs, they can line up at outside linebacker or end and force pressure to make quarterbacks throw bad passes. We’ve got the secondary to try and go out and make plays this year.”

There is a defensive team meeting on Friday that will give players a chance to talk to Grantham and, presumably, new defensive backs coach Scott Lakatos. Both are slated to meet in person with the media that cover Georgia for the first time Friday morning.

Rambo said he actually watched Connecticut and Lakatos against South Carolina in the Gamecocks' 20-7 win over South Carolina in the Papajohn's.com Bowl Jan. 2.

"I was very impressed with how they played," Rambo said.

Part-time offensive line starter Justin Anderson and backup fullback Fred Munzenmaier will be limited in the spring after undergoing shoulder surgery last week. Both are expected to be full speed by August. Reserve end Jeremy Longo is out for the spring after knee surgery.
