TV people are idiots

Like many of you this morning, between eating my cereal and brushing my teeth I was watching President Obama's acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize. Perhaps unlike many of you, I was, well, a little frustrated that the usual gang of pundits and "news" people who populate morning TV, like MSNBC's "Morning Zoo Crew," felt that their gasbagging on the morning's event was more important than letting you hear the musical performance that followed the presentation, even as it played silently in the background of their commentary.

What -- well, actually, who -- you missed while MSNBC, CNN and at least all the other news programming I flipped through this morning was ignoring her was the phenomenal Esperanza Spalding, a jazz vocalist and bassist who unique musical stylings are worth a listen. To that end, here's a sample of Ms. Spalding's work, and here's a brief Wall Street Journal blog piece regarding her performance at the Nobel award ceremony.

Help out Odyssey Newsmagazine
For a couple of years now, ever since the Banner-Herald has periodically played host to its young journalists, allowing them to do extensive work on the editorial page, I've been impressed with the staffers from Odyssey Newsmagazine, a consistently award-winning student publication at Clarke Central High School.

Tomorrow evening, there's a fundraiser for Odyssey. Here's the info:

The second annual Odyssey/Iliad Booster Club’s silent auction benefitting the Odyssey: Not So Silent Night at the Athens Institute for Contemporary Art will be held Dec. 11, 2009 from 7-9 PM at 160 Tracy Street in the Chase Warehouses, Unit 4.

The silent auction will feature original pieces of art from nationally recognized artists, jewelry, weekend getaways, computer services, memberships to local gyms, services from local salons and much, much more. Live music will be provided by Atlanta’s hottest Calypso band, PANABLAZE and the event will be catered. Get a little holiday shopping taken care of, have some great food and listen to some fun music!

Suggested donations at the door are $10. All proceeds will go directly to scholarships for students to attend regional conferences and to publish the award-winning Iliad Literary-Art Magazine and Odyssey Newsmagazine.

Admittedly, I'm not an entirely disinterested party here. But these kids are deserving of your support, so get yourselves on out to the auction tomorrow. I'm sure there will be someone around who can update you on the Clarke Central football team's battle for the state Class AAAA title, set for 8 p.m. Friday in the Georgia Dome.
