Some Owens-Atkins extras

We have our college football preview section coming out in Sunday’s newspaper and online.

The section includes a story on Georgia’s senior defensive tackle duo Jeff Owens and Geno Atkins and another on quarterback Joe Cox as he replaces Matthew Stafford as starter.

Here are some outtakes that didn’t make it into the Owens-Atkins story:

Jeff Owens on his leadership role this year: “My Mom used to tell me how I used to lead my brothers and they’re five years older (Jeff’s brothers are 30, 28 and 27). My role on this team is to motivate the young guys and help them out and lead by example."

Marcus Washington called Atkins a “gameplan changer.” He said teams can’t double team Atkins now with Owens lined up next to him as he returns from knee surgery. “Then you’ve got Justin Houston coming off the edge. There’s a lot they have to worry about up front as far as our defensive line goes. I think that will help our pass rush out a whole lot.”

Kade Weston on going fishing with Owens. “It’s relaxing. If you catch, you catch. If you don’t, you don’t, but you’re chilling. You’re away from everything.”

The relatively quiet Atkins on the talkative Owens: “He speaks his mind about everything and he always has a comment about everything. Sometimes it can get annoying. `What do you think about this? What you do think about this?’ He asks the same question over and over again.
`Do you like me?’
`Yes, I like you.
‘Why do you like me?’"

Defensive line coach Rodney Garner on the influence of Sandra Atkins, Geno’s mother, in his decision to stay for his senior season instead of entering the NFL draft. “I tell him all the time `Don’t feel bad that your mother is like that.’ That’s a good thing. There needs to be more mothers that are involved with their kids like that. She truly wanted her son to hold on to that little bit of innocence as long as he could.”

Sandra Atkins on her son staying for his senior season. “We definitely want to win the SEC championship. The 2006 signing class was supposed to do a lot and we haven’t done that yet. He likes school so it wasn’t a matter of him being ready to go. I think he was glad that he could use me as the decision maker, but if he had to make the decision on his own, he would have chose to stay.”
