Welcome to Day 2 here at SEC Media Days.
Just got out of an interview that Georgia coach Mark Richt had with beat writers and some select national writers. He’s scheduled to take the podium first this morning in the formal press conference setting.
Some quick nuggets from Richt:
-- The coaches still think that defensive tackle signee Kwame Geathers will be good to go, but the NCAA clearinghouse has not yet given Geathers the OK.
“We still expect him to be here,” Richt said. “There’s a couple of more hoops that he had to jump through and hopefully he’s jumping through him right now.”
-- Richt said he not only voted for Tim Tebow for first-team All-SEC quarterback, but if he had a vote nationally, he would have voted for the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, too. “I think that guy, he might be the greatest player-slash-leader, maybe the greatest one ever in college football. If you take his ability, his productivity, his leadership, his ability to get everybody to rally him, there’s been no one like that.”
-- Richt said he told fans at Bulldog Clubs in the spring not to fret about the slow early pace of this recruiting class.
“It’s going to be OK,” he said he told them. “We’re evaluating and offering the right people. It’s going to be fine.”
The 2010 class has picked up speed in the past month and a half and now is up to 18 commitments. Richt by the way avoided delving into the controversy of Carver Columbus. Its coach said Georgia is not welcome to recruit there after the Bulldogs pulled a scholarship offer from quarterback Devin Burns.
While Richt spoke, defensive tackle Jeff Owens turned the tables on the writers. He had a flip camera going to record the moment. He was recording the footage for Fox Sports Net.
At the podium, Richt was asked about his thoughts on the future of the Florida game in Jacksonville.
“This is what I want to do. I want to focus on winning that game,” he said. “That’s all I want to do. I just want to focus on trying to win this game. That’s my goal from here on in. That will be my pat answer from here on in."
And wearing black jerseys: “We may wear black jerseys again, we don’t know. One thing about the blackout is if the fans don’t buy into it, it’s no good. ... After what happened against Alabama last year, I’m not sure everybody will wear black. We have the ability to do it. We have the jerseys.”
---
Alabama coach Nick Saban is friends with New England coach Bill Belichick. So is Florida's Urban Meyer.
“They work about as hard as anybody I know," Saban said of the Gators. "We’re a blue-collar program so we have a tremendous amount of respect for that.”
No surprise. Saban said he, too, voted for Mr. Tebow on his All-SEC ballot.
"I think he’s one of the most outstanding leaders I’ve ever seen in our coaching career," Saban said. "I think he might be one of the most outstanding players. I also think everybody should have the right to vote for who they want to. That’s what a lot of people have fought for in this country for a long time. I don’t know why anybody would be interested. I guess it’s somebody trying to create news. I wouldn’t point any fingers on that."
---
Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt was so impressed with Tebow's postgame speech to the media about how hard he would work after the Gators' loss to the Rebels last season the said he has Tebow’s words on his desk and has read them to his team.
Nutt said there are two keys to beating Florida--win the turnover battle and limit big plays for Florida.
"We didn’t turn the ball over and we got three turnovers," Nutt said. "Tim Tebow is going to make plays. Percy Harvin, he’s not there anymore but they can say `Next.' They have playmakers all over the field. Limit those big plays. It gives you a chance to win the game."
---
Tebow takes the podium and gets asked the expected about if he'll be motivated by the snub by the one voters on the coaches' All-SEC team.
"I really don’t think this will be something I’ll think about too much," Tebow said. "I really have enough to be motivated about, plus I’m a really self-motivated person. I’m not going to run sprints thinking about the coach that didn’t vote for me. That’s quite all right."
