A summer Odyssey

They're back, and we couldn't be happier about it.

For the remainder of the summer, the Banner-Herald's editorial page will feature the work and insights of staff members at Odyssey Newsmagazine, Clarke Central High School's consistently major-award-winning monthly exploration of issues at the school and in the community. Also in the mix will be Odyssey alum and 2009 Clarke Central graduate Bryan Barks, whose wit and wisdom have graced these pages in recent months.

In the days and weeks ahead, you'll be hearing from Odyssey staff members Lauren Pruitt, Tyler Elrod, Kinsey Clark, Alex Morris, Lexi Deagen, Tori Bambo and, quite possibly some other Odyssey voices.

For a few weeks this summer -- current plans include the weeks of June 15-21, June 29-July 5, and July 13-19 -- we'll be turning the editorial pages over to small teams of these journalists. They'll be penning house editorials, choosing and editing letters to the editor, selecting the daily editorial cartoons and writing opinion pieces.

Outside of those specific weeks, they'll be contributing to the editorial pages as their other summer obligations allow, and it's entirely possible you'll be seeing their bylines in the Banner-Herald's news pages.

We're excited about the opportunity to get to know these young people in the coming weeks, and we're also excited at the chance to look at this community, and the world, through their eyes. We hope you, our readers, also will gain some new insights from the thoughts the Odyssey staffers will be offering up in the days ahead.

No bug bites or sunscreen ---

Well that ought to be interesting. Certainly will be a good summer project for the students.

Invite them to come over here to the Blogs, where the real action is. Well, at least among the eight or so people who participate.

If they are going to address education issues, maybe they can dig into the extra $2000.00 that CCSD spends on each student and give an accounting. Seriously, seems to me that would be a good project, if for no other reason to have them appreciate the cost of their own education.

Also, I, and a lot of other people, would like to know the 11 administrative positions that will be eliminated, and what effect the elimination of the positions will have on the overall educational mission.

Spinning off into another direction, entirely, it's a real shame that only the hired help can post pictures here.

Here's link to a picture that I suspect could well have been shot in Athens.

Michelle Obama serving lunch in a soup line for the homeless. Good for her setting a example of public service.

The homeless, er, "guests", were so impressed by the historical nature of the appearance that this one "guest" made sure to record the event on his Blackberry.

P.S. If there are copyright issues, these are wire photos, and I assume one of the good people here will insert the correct link, if not the actual photo.

Good ideas, Ghost

... and I won't even ask you to pull your punches if some of our young folks meander into the blogosphere.

On a more serious note, I will be talking with them about doing some serious pieces about public education in Clarke County. Not sure what might come of it, but we'll see ... .
