James Toney apparently doesn't care to fight Herschel

The UFC just signed boxer 41-year-old James Toney to a contract, but he doesn't have any interest in fighting a "gimmick" bout against athletes known for other sports like Herschel Walker or Jose Canseco.

UFC president Dana White said in a story on Yahoo Sports that he isn't sure what his plans will be for Toney -- who was a lot of fun to watch fight in his prime -- but that he plans for him to be a legit fighter in his organization.

We'll see about that. Toney hasn't exactly kept himself in tip-top shape lately, although he says he's got his weight in check now. It's an interesting idea and an interesting story, although you Herschel fans won't care for his thoughts on your favorite Bulldog:

Props to UGA's sports info. staff

Yesterday, the Football Writers Association of America released its first "Super 11" -- the list of the top 11 sports information departments in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision. A surprise to nobody who deals with the various SEC sports information departments is that Georgia made the list.

The Super 11 in alphabetical order: Buffalo, Clemson, East Carolina, Georgia, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, San Jose State, Southern California (USC), Texas and Utah.

Claude Felton and his crew are good folks and it's hard to imagine how some of them could be more helpful than they are when it comes to providing useful information to the various media members, facilitating interviews, managing postgame stuff and just being fun to work around.

Trey talks

I didn't need quotes for the column I wrote from Saturday's UGA win against Alabama, but I like talking to Trey Thompkins, so I talked to him for a minute after the game. He's a sharp kid, although I'd recommend switching from a journalism major to something a little more stable -- as if a pro basketball future doesn't await him, anyway.

Anyway, I thought this was a good quote he gave about how Georgia needs to take the next step in its progress and win a road game (they're 0-6 in SEC play away from Stegeman):

"It’s just another level of maturity we’ve got to reach. This is a team that has so much potential and we’re to the point where now we want to reach that potential. We’re tired of hearing about how we’re gonna be so great, how we just need to keep working hard and it’s gonna come. We want it to come now and we want it to start showing how hard we’re working."

Here are a couple of other things he had to say:

Blake Barnes, Le QB

Thanks to my buddy Chuck, who tends bar at the Taco Stand downtown -- a place where I spend an inordinate amount of time and money -- I got a chance to see what former Georgia quarterback Blake Barnes is up to lately.

He's quarterbacking what I guess is a semipro football team in Paris, France. Blake's team, the Flash, was profiled on CBS' Sunday morning news show.

Seems like a fun thing for a young guy to do for a few months. Blake always seemed like a really nice kid, so I hope he has a good time over there.

Signing Day preview

It's shaping up to be Georgia's most interesting signing day in quite a while. So we'll do our best to have everything covered tomorrow at our centralized signing day page.

We have prepared profiles of each signee that we'll post as their paperwork arrives at UGA. So keep checking back to see who has been processed, as we'll update live throughout the day. Included with each signee (except for any surprise additions tomorrow) is audio analysis of the prospect from Scout.com Southeast Recruiting Manager Chad Simmons, who recruiting junkies know is among the best in the business in our area.

There will also be a couple of video interviews I recently conducted with Georgia's two signees who are already on campus -- offensive lineman Kolton Houston and safety Jakar Hamilton. We'll add some more video content later in the day.

We'll update headlines on there throughout the day, plus there will be a running chat starting at 7:30 a.m.

A little Braves news

The Atlanta Braves are getting ready to start their annual community caravan -- where players, coaches, announcers and execs visit towns in the region for charity events and autograph signings -- this weekend.

The tour stop in Athens will be an autograph signing on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at Academy Sports (3505 Atlanta Highway). Braves scheduled to attend that day are former UGA catcher Clint Sammons, Matt Diaz, Troy Glaus, Eric O'Flaherty, general manager Frank Wren and coach Glenn Hubbard.

You can find out more dates and times for the other caravan stops at braves.com/caravan.

Also, Peachtree TV released the schedule of Braves games that will air on its network today. I doubt many people care to see that full list, but it's always a pleasant e-mail to receive. It means the season's right around the corner.

Albert's words of wisdom

If it wasn't such a pain to post audio clips, I'd have included audio of my interview with Georgia's Albert Jackson with my game story from tonight's Georgia-Tennessee men's basketball game.

Jackson is Georgia's only four-year scholarship senior, so he's seen plenty of lows to go along with today's high -- a dominant 15-point win against the No. 8 team in the country.

Not only was it a good win, but it was on TV and it still drew the first sellout in three years at Stegeman Coliseum. It was a great sign for Mark Fox that certainly validates the job he's doing and the progress this team has made under his watch.

Anyway, Albert is quite obviously a thoughtful guy who wants to do things the right way. You could hear in his voice how proud he is to be one of the veteran leaders on this team -- and how much it meant to him that people came out to support them today. Pay attention to the last quote in particular.

Good night for Bulldogs

If you haven't made it out to Stegeman Coliseum to watch Georgia's women play, you're missing out. Unlike the men's team, I believe you can get a ticket to any game for $5 -- and you'll see a team that plays its rear end off from the tip to the final horn.

I can't believe that they beat Tennessee tonight. The Lady Vols had every discernible edge in that game and yet Georgia hung with them. And then they hit a couple of huge baskets, got a couple of huge stops and pulled away in the final seconds. What a tough, energetic, impressive team Andy Landers is trotting out on the floor. I can't recall ever enjoying a women's basketball game more than that one tonight. It was like a boxing match where the two competitors stand in the middle of the ring and trade uppercuts all night. Not aesthetically pleasing, necessarily, but darn satisfying in the end.

Veazey hunt

We already ran this brief on a way to vote for Georgia baseball's Chance Veazey to participate in a dream hunt. I thought maybe I'd post it here as well...

Georgia freshman baseball player Chance Veazey is progressing well at the Shepherd's Clinic, recovering from a motor scooter accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down.

Veazey is an avid outdoorsman, and his dream is to go on a whitetail deer hunt in South Texas.

Now you can help send him on his dream hunt and win a chance to go with him. Donate to the Chance Veazey Foundation by texting "Chance" to 38066. Your phone service provider will charge $3.99 per text and you may enter as many times as you wish. The contest will run through January 15.

Ryan Klesko's Blue Ryno Foundation is donating the two hunts. Extra funds will be donated to the Chance Veazey Foundation and the Shepherd's Clinic.

Visit www.grandslammobilemarketing.com/chance for the no-purchase entry method.
