Random musings on a Sunday night
Submitted by Ann Marie Miani on Sun, 08/24/2008 - 10:06pm.Party time, excellent
Wayne Campbell: Or, imagine, being able to be magically whisked away to ... Delaware. (pauses) Hi. I'm in Delaware.
I don’t mean to make fun of Delaware … but I would bet serious money that THAT quote is just about the only thing a lot people know about Delaware.
I know a few more things (two of my college roommates were from there) like they have no sales tax and really weird looking license plates. It also was one of the shortest states (time-wise) to drive through on my twice-yearly journey from South Carolina to Connecticut. But it does have tolls, which are no fun. Oh and I actually can point it out on a map (someone once asked one of my roommates if Delaware was near Utah -- no joke).
So when I found out that Delaware Sen. Joe Biden was Barack Obama’s VP choice, I texted one of my old roommates.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
Submitted by Ann Marie Miani on Wed, 08/20/2008 - 6:09pm.I feel like we have a little pot and kettle action going on with this whole
China substituted a “cute kid” for a “not as cute kid*” to sing a song during the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics.
Sure it sucks — for the “not as cute kid.”
Is it just me, or does it seem a tad bit hypocritical for Americans to be judging the Chinese after we gave the world Milli Vanilli and C+C Music Factory.
The fact of the matter is this country puts beauty above all else when it comes to ratings (see almost any show in primetime) and entertainment (see any number of celebutantes who do nothing except be pretty and go to parties).

Harry Potter and the Tales of the Writers' Strike
Submitted by Ann Marie Miani on Thu, 08/14/2008 - 11:38pm.Well folks, it looks like my fall/winter just got a little less happy. Because of the writers' strike last year (and because studios like to make a ton of money), the release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has been delayed until next summer.
I don't know about any of you guys, but book 6 is my favorite and was really looking forward to the movie. And if they knew they were going to do this to us, I wish they hadn't released the trailer.
But as much as this sucks (and it so does), there is a silver lining. According to the story on E! Online, "Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group president Jeff Robinov also made a fine point: There will now be less of a wait between the sixth and seventh (and eighth) Potter films. The studio is eyeing respective summer releases in 2010 and 2011 for the two-part Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."
So looks like the list of things (entertainment-wise) that I have to look forward to this winter has been whittled down to two: The release of J.K. Rowling's "Tales of the Beedle Bard"
and the "Twilight" movie.
UPDATE
Looks like since Harry Potter was bumped, the Twilight got moved up to a Nov. 21 release. This really does makes the sting of the HP bump a little less painful.

'Tropic' blunder
Submitted by Ann Marie Miani on Wed, 08/13/2008 - 2:28pm.Who would have thought that a movie would cause such a ruck … nevermind. I forget that sometimes people tend to take movies too seriously and they do cause a ruckus.
The latest ruckus has to do with “Tropic Thunder”, a Ben Stiller movie in which Robert Downey Jr. appears in blackface and they word “retard” is used … a lot.
What I find interesting is that the retard thing has pissed off more people than Robert Downey Jr. in blackface. Looks like race relations have come a long way if people aren’t upset about THAT.

'Heroes' and Villains
Submitted by Ann Marie Miani on Sat, 08/09/2008 - 6:05pm.‘Heroes’ in Athens
So … I was trolling on ew.com the other day and so this on the Ausiello Files and got a little excited.
Question: What is up with Kristen Bell and Heroes? It’s been ages since we’ve heard anything. – Steven
Ausiello: She's back on the set shooting her multi-episode arc as we speak! Woo-hoo! In other Heroes news, look for the action (or at least part of the action) to shift to a comic book shop in Athens, Georgia around Episode 11.
I don’t know if this means that they will actually film here in town. I sent the info to our features editor Julie Phillips, so hopefully she will be able to enlighten us in a few days.

Really? No one saw that coming?
Submitted by Ann Marie Miani on Sun, 08/03/2008 - 7:19pm.So it looks like ”Dark Knight” is going to make a zillion dollars soon and this is what a Universal (which just released "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" this weekend) exec said after The Mummy came in at No. 2 at the box office this weekend:
“It looked like we could do somewhere between $45 and $50 million, but no one could have foreseen the juggernaut ‘The Dark Knight’ has become,” said Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal.
Um … everyone in the world who hasn’t been living under a rock since Jan. 22 pretty much foresaw that. Man talk about oblivious.

'BREAKING DAWN' IS ALMOST HERE!!!!
Submitted by Ann Marie Miani on Fri, 08/01/2008 - 12:11pm.I know I haven't really been waiting THAT long, but I am so excited about the release of "Breaking Dawn" tonight. Work today is going to be difficult. And I know others in the office feel that way, too. Many of the women here are now "Twilightaholics."
So here is my last (possibly) "Twilight" post ....
P.S. Jason ... Robert Pattinson is NOT too young for us. Really what is six years in the grand scheme of things? :)

A divine little kitten
Submitted by Ann Marie Miani on Wed, 07/30/2008 - 4:39pm.I know I said I was on “Twilight” hiatus, but I saw this video on cnn.com this afternoon and just had to share.
Apparently this family in South Bend, Ind., took in two abandoned kittens. The family said that while petting one of the kittens, the face of Jesus could be seen in the kitten’s fur.
Now you know how much of a skeptic I am, but I have to admit in the still shot it defiantly looks “Shroud of Turin”-y.
So here is my question to you. If you were a deity, what would you choose as the medium in which to show your face?
Me? I’d probably choose a rock formation. It’s a little more on the permanent side than your typical Virgin Mary oil spots or reflections off glass buildings.
Now I am off to check out my tabby to see if she has any divine faces in her fur … wouldn’t THAT be ironic?
UPDATE 11:58 p.m.: My kitty Athens (I had her BEFORE I moved here) does NOT have Jesus in her fur ... but she does have what looks like an "M" on her forehead.

Away message: 'Twilight' edition
Submitted by Ann Marie Miani on Thu, 07/24/2008 - 5:04pm.Sorry I haven’t posted in while faithful ABH blog readers, but I have been super obsessed with reading the ”Twilight” series as of late. I am almost done with “New Moon” (I seriously had to force myself to put it down at 4 a.m. this morning and go to bed). I’ll be starting “Eclipse” tonight and I am fairly certain that I’ll be done in time for the release of “Breaking Dawn” on Aug. 2.
So as you can guess, very little is actually breaking through that wall and I can’t think of anything else to write about.
So instead of boring you all with "Twilight" talk, I’ll be taking a little hiatus until I’m done with the books … that is unless anyone WANTS to talk about them. Seriously, if anyone wants to talk about them, comment below.
P.S. Check out Sunday's Living section for some "Twilight" coverage!

Look who is playing at The 40 Watt: Whigs edition
Submitted by Ann Marie Miani on Sat, 07/19/2008 - 10:37pm.So I was just checking the 40 Watt Web site because a friend of mine said he might be coming to Athens when Tokyo Police Club plays here. I couldn’t remember when that was, so I figured I look so I know when to have my house clean for an overnight guest.
So I am scrolling down and I see they are playing with The Whigs on Sept. 10. I actually had to repress my excitement. I don’t check the site that often, so I have no idea how long that has been on there. Am I breaking any here or am I the last person in Athens to know? Regardless, tell me who isn’t excited about seeing The Whigs play in Athens again. It’s been MONTHS!
